The early April special election for San Diego County’s District 1 Board of Supervisors seat did not produce an outright winner, setting the stage for a July 1 runoff between Chula Vista Mayor John McCann and Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre. With all precincts reporting, McCann leads with 42.38% of the vote (28,087 votes), while Aguirre follows at 32.33% (21,424 votes). Since no candidate secured over 50%, the race will advance to a second round.
The election, which saw a 17.8% voter turnout, will determine the ideological balance of the Board of Supervisors. Currently split 2-2 between Republicans and Democrats, McCann’s victory would tilt the board to the right, while an Aguirre win would maintain Democratic influence.
Key issues in District 1 include homelessness, housing affordability, public safety, and the ongoing Tijuana River sewage crisis.
Other candidates, including San Diego Councilwoman Vivian Moreno (13.47%) and Chula Vista Deputy Mayor Carolina Chavez (7.74%), did not make the runoff.
