The Southeast Live Well Center buzzed with energy on May 10th as Women of Color Roar presented its 2025 Spring Leadership Academy, drawing a packed room of high school and college students ready to shape their futures. WOC Roar founder, Angela de Joseph, launched the leadership academy in 2023.
Held at 5101 Market Street, the event focused on tools for success from AI-powered resume building to mastering tech platforms and mapping out paths to college and career. “Higher Heights in Education” was brought to life in Session 3, moderated by Latanya West, Managing Editor of The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint.
Students listened closely as a powerhouse panel took the stage: Dr. Tina King, President of the College of Continuing Education; Dr. Ricky Shabazz, President of San Diego City College; Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, San Diego Unified School District Board Trustee; and Denise Whisenhunt, President of Grossmont College. Each shared real-world insight on navigating education, leadership, and perseverance.
Attendees didn’t just leave with inspiration—they walked away with laptops, computers, and gift cards, thanks to generous giveaways aimed at helping students stay connected and college-ready.
In a community where opportunity matters, Saturday’s event made a clear statement: the future is in capable hands.
